I was remembering the first Silent Hill movie and the director and crew’s reason for making Harry’s character a woman, and while that in and of itself is a can of worms worthy of another discussion, it got me thinking: when was the last time we saw a vulnerable male protagonist in a horror movie? One who screams, cries, panics--not as a result of being tortured (which I think even the most sexist of folks would agree to be a reasonable, expected reaction from anyone) but of the horrors actively terrorizing him.
The only one I could come up with, incidentally, was the big badass horror icon himself, Ash Williams. In the first film, he remains throughout it a normal, kind of timid guy, terrified of the horrors he’s faced with, and taking on the role normally reserved for the “final girl.” Even in the second film, where he's much more physically adept, he still screams fearfully and weeps openly at points. It isn’t until the third film that he’s become a fully-fledged tough guy.
So what other ones exist?
Remember the criteria: movies only, and can’t be from the “torture porn” genre.
