I like watching film adaptations before reading the books they're based on, not because I'm afraid of getting attached to my "vision" of the book and having it be replaced by the film, but because I am awful at forming my own visions to begin with. No matter what the description, I can never form a concrete image of the character in my head and, as a result, I'm spending most of the book floundering about trying to figure out "my" own visualization, rather than enjoying the story. Films help fill in that visual gap I have trouble with, even when they're not entirely accurate.
