I watched 2001: A Space Odyssey a couple of nights ago. To quote a certain MST3k episode, "Eraserhead makes more sense than this movie does." If it weren't for this essay, I don't think I would've been sure of what conclusion to come to about its message. Same deal with Eraserhead, yet, while the events were a helluva lot more bizarre than what when on it 2001, I somehow had a better understanding of what was going on. In fact, the movie reminded me of Eraserhead in a lot of ways. Not in terms of the plot, but in terms of the quiet, eerie atmosphere and how it tells its story in a strictly "show-not-tell"-way. And they both have obscure endings that'll keep you up at night.
Off-topic-but-on-topic--HAL 9000 reminded me of Marvin the Paranoid Android, and after that I couldn't help but think that a 2001/Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy crossover would be AWESOME. More awesome than a wizard turning you into a sperm whale. Or almost.
